Instead of just fining people who sped, they entered those who didn\u2019t into a lottery to win the fine money. Rewarding good behaviour rather than punishing bad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s true that Volkswagen ran a short-lived experiment to find <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aap.com.au\/factcheck\/swedens-speed-camera-lottery-hit-a-red-light-years-ago\/\">fun ways to change driving behaviour<\/a>. While it didn\u2019t last long, the experiment made a simple point: people often respond better to positive reinforcement than penalties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it doesn\u2019t stop at driving. Take <strong>Alcoa<\/strong>. Under CEO Paul O\u2019Neill, the aluminium giant didn\u2019t just track accidents. They focused on creating a culture where safety came first and employees felt safe speaking up. Anyone who embraced this mindset, reported hazards, and <a href=\"https:\/\/strategicdiscipline.positioningsystems.com\/bid\/104994\/Alcoa-s-Key-to-Safety-Success-Communication-Keystone-Habit\">contributed to a safer workplace got recognised and promoted<\/a>. Those who resisted didn\u2019t. It wasn\u2019t about punishing mistakes,\u00a0 it was about celebrating the right behaviour and creating psychological safety. The result? Accident rates plummeted, and performance shot up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there\u2019s <strong>Vitality<\/strong>, which motivates people to exercise by turning healthy behaviour into rewards &#8211; points, discounts, prizes &#8211; rather than scolding inactivity. And if you\u2019ve ever ignored a Duolingo email telling you your Italian skills are \u201cgetting mouldy\u201d or that the app is disappointed in you, you know guilt doesn\u2019t always work. Behavioural science backs this up: we often respond more to the pleasure of reward than the pain of failure. Of course, negative feedback works too; <a href=\"https:\/\/thedecisionlab.com\/biases\/loss-aversion\">loss aversion is real<\/a>. The trick is balance: enough reward to inspire action, a dash of consequence to keep us on track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pain vs Pleasure: What Really Moves Us?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When using <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.twentytwo.digital\/ukbodytalk\/resources\/blogs\/storytelling-in-business-communication\/\">storytelling in business<\/a>, most people start with the pain: what\u2019s wrong, what\u2019s difficult. Then they jump straight to the solution. Makes sense, right? But it misses a step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our brains respond to emotion first, logic second. Highlighting pain triggers concern, but jumping to a solution satisfies only logic. Desire? Not so much.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The \u201cbetter future\u201d does two things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It lets people picture themselves in a more positive reality.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It makes change feel worth the effort.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Airbnb\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/longform\/airbnb-travel-mission-brand\/\">\u201cBelong Anywhere\u201d campaign<\/a><\/strong> nails this. They didn\u2019t just sell homes; they sold a vision of authentic, personal travel experiences. People weren\u2019t just booking a place to stay; they were buying into a lifestyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lesson for presentations or pitches is simple: if you only talk about the problem, you might get nods of agreement, but you won\u2019t spark action. Show what success looks like, what people gain, and why it\u2019s worth pursuing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Think corporate change. Many leaders start with the pain: \u201cIf we don\u2019t switch systems, we\u2019ll fall behind competitors.\u201d Good. People need context. But often, we then jump straight to a logic-heavy solution: \u201cHere\u2019s the new system, here\u2019s the workflow.\u201d People can follow the logic, but they rarely feel motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The missing piece? Show the destination: \u201cBy moving to this system, we\u2019ll free up hours every week, make collaboration easier, and be more productive.\u201d Suddenly, your audience can see themselves there, imagine the reassurance, and feel compelled to act. Pain grabs attention; reward drives behaviour. Both matter, but don\u2019t leave people stuck in the problem. They need to see the destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the \u201cbetter future\u201d doesn\u2019t have to be huge. It can be small, tangible, relatable: a project delivered on time, a team communicating well, or a delighted client. Make it vivid, and your audience stops passively listening and starts leaning in, asking questions, and taking action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focusing only on the problem keeps people stuck in \u201cwhat\u2019s wrong,\u201d triggering stress and avoidance. Showing the better future sparks motivation, curiosity, and hope &#8211; the exact things that get people moving.
