Since its launch 2 weeks\u2019 ago it\u2019s amassed over 66 million views, making it the most <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/tv-and-radio\/2025\/mar\/25\/netflixs-adolescence-makes-tv-history-in-the-uk\">watched UK television title in history<\/a>. Its volcanic impact has brought to the fore a subject matter that\u2019s been bubbling under in recent years; we\u2019re discussing &#8216;incel culture&#8217; at dinner parties and trawling the internet for more information. We\u2019ve seen statements from leaders of States and growing calls for it to be shown in schools. And if you\u2019ve got kids of a certain age, the series has us all shining a spotlight on exactly what our teens are up to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can a series do that? And can we really pinch some of the techinques and pop it into our own business communications? OK, perhaps it\u2019s a leap of faith to assume our business presentations will be cited as \u2018a must view\u2019 by Keir Starmer, but we can elevate our content beautifully and impactfully by\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Making it PERSONAL<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people I\u2019ve talked to binge-watched \u2018Adolescence\u2019 \u2013 four hours staring at a screen. You try asking anyone to sit on a Teams screen for four hours and the excuses will clog the chat box and the little tiles on the screen turn dark. One of the reasons \u2018Adolescence\u2019 has usall gripped is that it\u2019s the personal story of Jamie and his family. <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.twentytwo.digital\/ukbodytalk\/resources\/blogs\/storytelling-in-business\/\">Personal stories have huge resonance<\/a> for us as human beings; we identify with the characters and the \u2018thread\u2019 of their journey, personal stories illustrate bigger issues in a way that\u2019s tangible and heartfelt. We are then able to apply those understandings to a bigger more impactful picture, in the case of \u2018Adolescence\u2019, we move psychologically from the spotlight on Jamie and his family and see the wider implications of incel culture on global society. Here are some ways you could use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal for &#8216;Credibility&#8217;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u2018Credibility\u2019 is key for gaining trust. More often than not, \u2018credibility\u2019 in a meeting is a few lines from a CV or a job title (and let\u2019s face it, in business, many job titles are impenetrable), or it\u2019s skipped altogether, leaving the <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.twentytwo.digital\/ukbodytalk\/resources\/blogs\/why-should-i-trust-you\/\">foundation for trust<\/a> pretty creaky. Adding a personal story about your involvement adds instant credibility, and you don\u2019t have to be an Oscar-winning writer to do it. It\u2019s the difference between reporting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;23% of our employees report that they are working in silos&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">to saying, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I was chatting with my Team yesterday about how they felt about recent changes and there was an awkward silence.  Eventually one of them said they were feeling isolated. And you know what? A recent staff survey says that 23% of our employees feel the same&#8221;. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a little personal story your audience can connect to and subtly links your credibility to the issue that\u2019s being discussed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal for \u2018Proof\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \u2018Adolescence\u2019 we see first-hand the personal proof of the dark world that Jamie inhabits, and we are gripped by it. In business we can use personal stories as either proof of the challenge or proof of the concept solution. It\u2019s why, for example, when there\u2019s a hike in interest rates the television news will focus on what that means for \u2018Janet and her family in Teeside\u2019 and then link it to the wider statistical implications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So why not add a story of proof around your data driven concepts? If you\u2019re launching a new product or process let\u2019s hear about the personal story of someone connecting with it \u2013 make it \u2018Peter\u2019s story\u2019. The trick is to then \u2018blow it up\u2019 and tell us<br>how many other \u2018Peters\u2019 there are out there; take the personal, then magnify it statistically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Personal for \u2018Emotional Connection\u2019<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We all wept with Jamie\u2019s parents in episode four as we felt their horrific desperation. And whilst our job in business is not to have audiences wrecked emotionally, business communication has gone too far the other way; there\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edutopia.org\/article\/8-evidence-based-tips-make-your-lectures-more-engaging-and-memorable\/\">evidence to suggest that process driven content loses us in under 10 minutes. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We were working years ago with the Head of Safety for a huge organisation in Europe. He was having struggles with getting the staff in the factory to consistently wear their goggles \u2013 whatever the stats and the figures put in front of them, there wasn\u2019t 100% uptake. At their annual conference he told the story of Oliver \u2013 an old friend he had grown up with in the business who had been blinded by an unforeseen chemical reaction because he wasn\u2019t wearing his goggles. He ended the presentation by telling us that that the most upsetting thing for him, was that Oliver would never see his beautiful daughter Eleanor grow up. The impact? A huge uptake in goggle wearing and self-regulation to make sure that \u2018Oliver\u2019s story\u2019 would not be repeated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might be asking yourself how you this emotional story translates to you offering up a directive to a client on an new auditing tool, but how do you personally feel about it?
